A landscape design is a crucial step to achieving your property dreams; it’s a map to begin & to finish.

You know you SHOULD get one, but…

…”Should I hire a landscape designer or can I DIY this?”

In this article, I will walk you through your options. You’ll learn:

1. What it means to hire a landscape designer
(And tips to find the right one)

2. The Pros & Cons of Hiring vs. DIY

(Know these before starting)

3.
How to avoid the top mistakes
(Protect your money, time, and sanity)

4. H
ow to start designing your land DIY
(In a way no one else can for you).

Option 1: Hire A Landscape Design Pro

✅Done Faster. Less mistakes.

❎More $$. Done…. wrong??

It is very tempting to just hire a pro. If you have the money (and find the right designer), you will get something amazing.

But what is the “right designer”??

Quite simply – “book & street smart.”

You want training AND experience.

You need knowledge AND wisdom.

So if you are going to hire a designer, make sure they are experienced in design, installation, and using the things you want. In other words, they are wise.

Have they built a pond?

Raised chickens?
Owned a garden?

Have they ____? [Insert your want here]

(For example, I’d rather have a master gardener design my garden than a landscape architect who has never touched one.)

Experienced designers are out there. For those on a tight budget, you can hire someone online through websites like Fivver or Upwork… Or keep it local and Google “Landscape designer” + “[your city]”.

Either way, review their portfolio, make sure they are trained in your climate, experienced in the subject areas needed, and have achieved similar successful projects.

For example, if you were to consider hiring me:

CLIMATE – Numerous projects in the tropics, sub-tropics, and temperate climates. Most designs & installs are in Canada, USA, and Australia.

TRAINING – Began career as art teacher with formal education in the arts, design, and education itself. Internationally certified Permaculture designer & teacher.

EXPERIENCE & PROJECTS – Experience in all sorts of projects; from city yards, to acreages, to retreat centres, to community spaces (schools, churches, and city land). Designs and installs have included components such as gardens, food forests, rain harvesting, composting, animal systems, ponds, hardscaping, and Air BnB stays.

Option #2: DIY Your Landscape Design

✅ Save $. Learn & be empowered.

❎ Takes longer. More mistakes.

If you enjoy learning and want to stretch your budget, learning to DIY landscape design might be for you.

Whether you are tech-savy or not…

… or are art-savy or not…

… ANYONE can learn landscape design.

You can do it with crayons, butcher paper, and your kitchen table.

Or you can use fancy software and a drafting table.

(Or just Canva.)

It’s not important how “pretty” the design is.

But it does need to be strategic.

It’s also not important (or possible) to know everything… but you DO have to learn a little about a lot of things.

So if you like the idea of becoming a tactician who makes thriving, efficient, and beautiful spaces… you should definitely learn DIY landscape design!

Will it take some self-training? Yes.

If the top mistake of hiring a pro is not hiring someone qualified, then the top mistake of DIY is not learning the basics.

I’ve taught over 1000 students to do this themselves.

  1. 🎓 As a 2-week certification course.

I also made a free mini-course so anyone can learn the basics, anywhere in the world, anytime

It’s called – “Plan Your Land Like a Pro With Permaculture Design” – and if you are interested, you can access it below.

In Review:

Getting a landscape design is an important step to getting your dream property – for visualization, for confirmation, for installation.

Both hiring a pro designer or going DIY are good options. The “best” option depends on how much money you want to spend and how much time you have.

If you hire, make sure you choose someone with knowledge + design skill AND wisdom/experience.

If you DIY, make sure to learn the basics of landscape design first.
The journey is exciting and rewarding, and the end result will be your own to proudly enjoy.

Whatever you choose, I wish you all the best!
