To be “off-grid” means to not be tied to the main utility grid. It is also possible to stay on the grid & have off-grid systems. For example, own a solar system and sell your extra power back to the grid.
Most people who live off-grid look after all their utility systems – power, heat, water, waste, & internet.
There are many reasons to go “off-grid”. For some, it’s about having resilience in the face of blackouts, rising prices, and climate change. For others, it’s about taking responsibility for their utilities, to be more green. For others, it’s about the lifestyle or it’s a necessity because of their remote location.
Living off-grid is not for everyone. But for those who do their research, plan accordingly, and buy the appropriate systems, it is a lot easier than you would think. (Tip: Don’t cheap out!)
The #1 mistake of off-grid living is not backing up your systems. For example, have 2 ways heat your house. Or 2 ways to generate electricity. Make sure you are secure in your house and your needs.
